This water bird can be found in open freshwater and saltwater marshes in southeastern, mid-western, and western regions of the United States.  It is the largest white egret with a length of about 40 inches from bill to tail.  It strides around on long legs searching for marsh animals including fish, snakes, crayfish and insects.  It can be told from other egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet.
