State Bird of New Jersey, Washington and Iowa

Found throughout much of the United States and southern Canada, the American Goldfinch males' bright yellow feathers contrast dramatically with the black patches on their face and wings.  During winter months, males' become brownish gray.  Females and juveniles are a duller yellow.
