Purple Martin
70216
Once common across portions of the eastern half of the United States, Purple Martins were a familiar site in open fields and pastures. These insect eaters tend to nest and migrate in large flocks or colonies, preferring hollow trees or man-made martin houses. A growing scarcity of nesting sites and competition from other birds for these sites has caused some concern for the population of this species.
