Found primarily in the southeastern portion of the United States, thse quails prefer dense grass and brush or, occasionally, open woods.  Their brown feathers blend in well with dry grasses at ground level.  They are usually found in larger groups, of coveys, where birds band together for safety.  This species eats a variety of seeds, insects and other bugs.  Habitat loss is causing their numbers to greatly decline in some areas.
